Mendel Letters 3: The Soup Nazi

Hard copies of these typed letters were discovered in an old camp trunk in the basement storage facility of one of the few buildings that remain standing in this Brooklyn neighborhood. The building is quite decrepit and is scheduled for demolition. The letters were found in November 2048 by a teenager who believes they were written by his great-grandfather. The letters are addressed to Mendel, the letter writer’s father, who appears to have been dead for at least six years when his son, whose name we are unsure of, started to write him. The son appears very agitated in some of the letters. With permission from the family, we are publishing them on the date they were written, only 28 years later.

Dear Mendel,

I wasn’t going to write for a few days but something in today’s news was so funny I couldn’t wait. Do you remember the T.V. show Seinfeld. One of the Seinfeld posse’s adversaries was a guy who ran a take-out soup café on the Upper West Side in Manhattan. They called him the Soup Nazi because if he didn’t think you were appreciative enough of his soup he would scream out “No Soup for You!” I was thinking about the show because the Nut-in-the-White-House announced “No Vaccine for New York” because he didn’t think the governor asked him nicely enough. We must have fallen down the rabbit hole without realizing it and are living in Alice’s Wonderland.

They finally finished the vote count in most of the states and it is clear to everyone except the White House nut job and a few rightwing television and radio hosts that Joe Biden will be the next President of the United States. So far the courts dismissed every effort to throw out votes as fraudulent, basically because there is no evidence of fraud. Some Republicans are toying with the idea of trying to get state legislatures to invalidate the vote and send people to the Electoral College who will support He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named. Not likely anyone wants to go down with a sinking ship and be labeled in history for trying to overthrow democracy in the United States.

The COVID virus is surging across the country. If you weren’t dead already they would probably put you on a ventilator. Just joking. Be good.
